Speaker Bio
Tina Walker-Ferguson (Rongomaiwahine, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Porou, Kai Tahu - she/they/ia)

Tina is an East Coast cuzzie living and cultivating kai and reconnection in Pōneke, Te Upoko o te Ika. Tina grew up in Te Moana a Toi, watching her brothers gather kaimoana, grow veges, fish and bring home eels as tall as her. It wasn’t until she reached her twenties, spent some time in the city that she realized what a taonga having access to the clean ocean and land to grow on was.

Since living in Te Upoko o te Ika (2019), Tina has co-founded a kaupapa called Cuzzies i te Māra with cuzzie Lani Rotzler-Purewa and helped establish Māra Kai at a local college, co-directed a food sovereignty community hub called the ReMakery and facilitated wānanga for whānau Māori in Te Awakairangi and Pōneke, including wānanga on hue and kumara cultivation. Currently Tina is working with Kaicycle (an urban food sovereignty and composting project) and Te Toi Mahana (local social housing provider) to set up a Māra Kai, kōhanga tupu at social housing in central Wellington alongside tenants and the wider community. Hua Parakore principles, whanaungatanga and honouring kōrero of the whenua are central to all of the mahi Tina connects to.
