Using Pacific research methodologies, the Matada Research Group investigated the desires of current and potential Pacific Audiences regarding museums. The goal was to encourage visitation, both digitally and in person, and establish a more meaningful connection between audiences and organisations. This research was conducted on behalf of Te Papa, but with a view to sharing with the wider GLAM sector in New Zealand. Through an online survey and talanoa sessions, Matada explored audience perceptions of museum offerings, barriers to engagement, and the key factors important to Pacific peoples in their connection to museums. The resulting themes encompassed creating an engaging visit, reaching digital audiences, increasing awareness of museum services, understanding Pacific communities' role in engagement, and recognising the significance of connections to collections. The research yielded five concrete strategies for Te Papa to implement, with potential applicability to other museums and GLAM organisations. This research is part of an ongoing program of audience research by Te Papa, and along with the distribution of findings, a potential NDF presentation or panel, presents an opportunity for the sector to inquire about the current research and future steps.
