Chris Liu is a creative technologist who has always been at the forefront of technology, from game design aspirations at a young age, through to XR and AI today. Specialising in virtual reality game design, interactive design, and immersive storytelling at the Auckland University of Technology, he focused on exploring an emerging field where the old ideas of how users interacted with content no longer applied, and where simple storytelling styles had to be rebuilt from the ground up.
After graduating, Chris leapt straight into the industry with DOTDOT, helping to develop esoteric experiences that captivated audiences in new ways, immersing them not just through traditional storytelling or interaction, but through guiding watchers into truly being a part of the story. From semi-digital installations to full virtual worlds, nothing in Chris’ portfolio has ever discerned a difference between the main character and the audience watching them.
In recent years, Chris has also delved into the oncoming melding of industries. As game design and film writing inexorably trade more and more ideas with each other, Chris has been exploring the phenomena on a technological front, working with industry experts to help bring software engines and techniques pioneered in gaming over to the film set, and bringing filmic expertise back to the gaming realm in return.
