Tuakoi Ohia is a proud wahine maori hailing from many iwi across Aotearoa. Growing up in Kirikiriroa, she was surrounded by many passionate maori who wanted the best for their community. Her parents, Bentham Ohia and Kate Cherrington are her biggest inspirations when it comes to giving back to her people. The creative arts was a pathway she always knew she’d pursue. After her time at kura, she attened The University of Otago where she studies Contemporary Music Performance and Indigenous Development. Afterward to she found her way to Tāmaki, where she had the goal to pursue acting. She started her way on screen then eventually found herself with Te Pou Theatre. This was when the real mahi began. Since being with this whanau, she has been able to upskill her pukenga in acting and wiriting. She has been involved in many theatre shows, has written a devised piece called, ‘Kōpū’, and is a board member for the company. She is thankful for the support and guidance from the directors of Te Pou Theatre, Amber Curreen and Tainui Tukiwaho, who continue to mentor her in her dreams.
