For 150 years, Canterbury Museum has been telling stories of Waitaha Canterbury. Now the Museum is embarking on an exciting new journey of redevelopment. The tired twentieth century buildings will be demolished, the iconic heritage buildings will be strengthened and restored, and base isolation added to most of the site. During this period of redevelopment, the Museum’s online presence is a crucial part of our engagement strategy. One tool emerging across GLAM sectors is the use of virtual reality tours. Before the Museum closed its doors, I was able to photograph every single galleries with the aim to create virtual tours from these. In this talk, I will discuss the process of creating the virtual tours, how the Museum is using them in our outreach and education programmes, what worked and what didn’t, as well as how this tool will be incorporated into our future galleries.
