To support the goal of having one million reo Māori speakers by 2040, Archives NZ, National Library and Te Papa are continuing to deepen their commitment to increasing visibility of te reo Māori across their websites.

The institutions wanted to learn how best to approach the usage and presentation of te reo Māori on their websites to create an experience that is both welcoming and mana enhancing.

Indigenous Design and Innovation Aotearoa (IDIA) was engaged to help better understand what a great te reo Māori experience could look like, based on the expectations of reo Māori speakers with varying levels of confidence, experience and proficiency when engaging with reo Māori content.

This research approach acknowledged, that like much of Aotearoa, the organisations were on a te reo journey, and will likely take some time to fulfil the outcomes of the research conclusions. We need a practical approach that could be phased over a number of years, but the goal was to align real audience needs with organisational goals regarding te reo Māori.
